Lakshadweep is the only coral atolls of the country and an archipelago comprising twelve atolls three reefs and six submerged sand banks lying scattered in the Arabian sea between 80 and 120 - 30' north latitude and between 710 and 740 east longitude at a distance ranging from 200Km. to 400Km.from main land. Lakshadweep has a cost line of 132 Km., Lagoon area of 4,200 Sq. Km., Territorial waters of 20,000Sq.Km. and Exclusive Economic Zone of 4 Lakhs Sq. Km.. The main fishery is developed on skipjack tuna. The estimated potential resources of the sea around Lakshadweep is about 1 lakh tones of Tuna and equal quantity of Shark. Fishing has become the main source of income of the people of Lakshadweep pushing behind coconut cultivation which was the main source of income of the people of Lakshadweep about two decades back. |
